New flower shop brings locally sourced, sustainable beauty to Glastonbury, CT

Glastonbury, CT—A fresh, vibrant, and eco-conscious floral haven has arrived in Glastonbury. Flower & Twine, a new flower shop and design studio, will hold its Grand Opening on April 12, offering a variety of creative services with a focus on locally sourced flowers, sustainability, and personalized floral design. Located at 548 New London Turnpike in the heart of Glastonbury, this charming space is the brainchild of local entrepreneur and floral designer Kerin Smollen, who brings more than 25 years of design experience and training from the renowned Flower School NYC.

Flower & Twine is redefining the floral experience with an innovative Bloom Bar, at which customers can select from a stunning array of fresh, locally grown flowers. Whether crafting a custom bouquet or creating an entire arrangement, guests are encouraged to get creative and explore their own floral artistry. The Bloom Bar offers a rotating selection of flowers from nearby farms, allowing for seasonal and sustainable choices that support local growers.

The shop also offers a variety of handpicked, locally made artisan goods, such as candles, soaps, and other crafted items, perfect for gifts or home décor. For those looking to explore more creative endeavors, the shop features DIY Terrariums, where visitors can create their own lush, miniature gardens.

Smollen, whose resume includes floral design for the White House as well as innovation experience at LEGO and Disney, brings unparalleled expertise to her new venture. “My goal is to provide a space where people can experience the beauty and joy of flowers in a way that’s both personal and sustainable,” said Smollen. “I’ve always been passionate about designing with nature, and I want my shop to reflect that commitment by supporting local growers and offering eco-friendly options for every occasion."

The shop also provides an array of services, including custom floral arrangements for events such as weddings, corporate gatherings, and private celebrations. Customers can enjoy delivery within a 25-mile radius of the shop, making it easy to bring beauty to their doorstep. The shop's event-design services include full-scale décor solutions and unique, tailor-made arrangements that reflect the individual style of each client.

For those looking for a unique experience, the shop boasts a beautiful second-floor Lounge, perfect for private floral-arranging classes, team-building activities, or small gatherings. The Lounge is also available for rental, providing a serene setting for workshops, meetings, or social events. As a nod to the growing trend of sustainable wedding planning, Flower & Twine also offers a bridal storage service, allowing brides to keep sourced event items in a secure, climate-controlled environment until their big day.

Flower & Twine offers not only the beauty of flowers, it embodies community, sustainability, and local craftsmanship. With its blend of innovative floral design, local artistry, and a welcoming environment, it’s set to become a favorite destination for Glastonbury residents and visitors alike.

About Kerin:
From Fortune 100 to Floral Design

Kerin is a Connecticut native who at age 12 began working in the greenhouse at her father’s Middletown, CT hardware store. It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with flowers and plants.

She attended colleges in her home state, earning an MBA from the University of Hartford, which launched her into a career designing digital tools and ways for businesses to better serve their customers. Kerin rose quickly through the ranks of some of the world’s most prominent brands, notching roles at ESPN and LEGO, where she led collaborations with Marvel Comics and Lucas Films. This led to a role as a senior vice president at New York Life. But life in the upper tiers of Fortune 100 companies didn’t feed her soul. Kerin not only craved the chance to start her own business and become master of her own destiny, but she also dreamed of launching a startup that would allow her to spend her days working with flowers and plants, just like when she was a kid. She began taking classes at Flower School NY, then trained with some of the top designers in the field

In August 2024, Kerin finally made her escape from corporate life. She launched Flower &  Twine not only to bring a lifelong passion full circle—she created it to share her love of all things floral with her neighbors in central Connecticut and the entire Northeast. She hopes you’ll love it just as much as she does.

About Flower & Twine

Why not just buy a bouquet from a grocery store? For most people, it’s the low price—but the reason those flowers are so cheap is because they’re sourced from growers in South America.

This supply chain is bad for sustainability and exploitive; the people growing them aren’t paid fair wages Flower & Twine, by contrast, sources from local gardens, micro-farms, flower farms and farming

collectives in Connecticut and across New England. In the offseason, we reach out to greenhouses and farms in the United States for succulents, tropicals, air plants, and off-season flowers. We also purchase all our silk and faux products used in order to keep wedding flowers out of landfills.

We are passionate about shortening the supply chain for flowers and investing in more sustainable options for decorating weddings and events, and design workshops, and for our bouquet subscriptions and other sales. When you purchase from Flower & Twine, you not only support a Connecticut-based, woman-owned small business, you support local farms, greenhouses and gardeners.
